What can or shouldn’t be stored in a unit?
Self-storage is excellent for storing overflow of many different material types from your home or business. Think of your storage unit as an additional garage or business storage room.
When you are planning for what you wish to store, business or personal purposes, make sure you consider the storage facilities rules and restrictions on if they will allow you to store that item on their premises. This is for your protection and your belongings, a facility staff member and other customers plus their belongings. You are required to sign a lease stating that you agree and understand the rules and restrictions of what items are allowable. A general rule, any material or item that is considered “dangerous” will not be allowed.
When thinking of renting a storage unit, create a preliminary list of the items you want to store. Have the list with you so it can be reviewed with the storage facility professional to make sure you’re in full compliance for allowable items. Disclosure of what will be stored is required. If you’re unsure if an item is acceptable, call the self-storage facility ahead of time to inquire. This prevent s any inconvenience when arriving to store you’re belongs at the storage location.

Combustible, Flammable, Hazardous, or Toxic Materials Considered “dangerous,” – These would Include gasoline, propane tanks, compressed gas, lamp, motor oil, kerosene, acid, corrosives, grease, fertilizer, cleaners, paint, narcotics, chemicals or hazardous, waste – toxic or biological. Products containing asbestos or asbestos are forbidden. Anything explosive cannot stored (fireworks, explosives, ammunition, or weapons).
Vehicles & Tires – Storing vehicles is generally acceptable, as long as they are registered, insure,d and in operational condition. Most facilities will not let you store more than four tires in your self-storage unit because of the cost to dispose of them.
Medical/Pharmaceutical Equipment & Supplies – As a sales rep you will find self-storage a great place to store medical supplies and samples of pharmaceuticals. This will keep your products organized, without having your office or car trunk getting cluttered. Most supplies are acceptable, but anything radioactive like equipment or supplies – or anything with radioactive materials – will not be stored legally.
Construction Equipment – With construction work it can be handy to stop by at an additional storage space for equipment and supplies on the way to the job site and pick up what you need. You should check with the self-storage location before you plan to store construction supplies and equipment. There are restricted equipment items– for example; underground water locating equipment is restricted.
Perishable Animal and Food Products – Perishable food products such as produce, meats or cereal, are restricted. Canned foods are allowed
Prohibited Miscellaneous Items – No animals dead or alive or living plants will be allowed. No stolen items are allowed. You can not plug in or use generators, space heaters, refrigerators, freezers, or live in units.
